dRMM have since 1995 focused on the relation between conception and construction within the simultaneous activities of teaching and practice. The work produced by dRMM and their students at the Architectural Association was characterised by the use of building industry catalogues as primary source material. These standard references to the construction industry become departure points for the production of non-standard architecture.
The book and exhibition featured key projects demonstrating new materials, techniques and solutions for a wide variety of programmes. The show is exciting, flexible and fun. When it opened at the Architectural Association gallery many architects and journalists said it was amongst the best shows they had ever seen there because it was so legible and so tangible; super-real. Perhaps because the special materials featured in the projects are presented as full size samples, prototypes or furniture, creating mini environments that the viewer can touch and move.
