Alex de Rijke

Founding Director of dRMM. Has presented dRMM’s work in Europe, South America and Asia on the relationship between design concepts and emerging construction types, especially advocating engineered timber.

De Rijke has taught widely, including at the AA and RCA. He is also active as occasional critic, lecturer, and guest professor, as architecture design advisor, and photographer.

At dRMM, de Rijke focuses on design innovation. He combines leadership of expanding practice with research into new materials and modern methods of construction. Alex has pioneered cross-laminated timber panel construction in the UK Norway and Australia.

Sadie Morgan

Bio

Sadie’s internal design expertise includes dRMM’s Dura, a radical reconfigurable modular design for an ‘Exemplar’ school of the future. She was design director on the award-winning No.one Centaur Street. Sadie was responsible for the colour strategy at Kingsdale School, and at Clapham Manor School.

Sadie guest lectures and contributes to design competition juries and advisory panels. She is external examiner at University of Wales Institute Cardiff, and Honorary Treasurer on AA Council. She studied interior design at the RCA and has taught design at institutions including Kingston University and the AA. Sadie now runs dRMM’s business.

Philip Marsh

Director

Bio

Philip has been central to dRMM’s education projects such as Kingsdale School, an acclaimed project that addressed student morale and education standards. This experience was furthered in dRMM’s Dura, a blueprint for local authorities and school communities, offering inspiration for the national Building Schools of the Future programme. He was project architect for Clapham Manor Primary School, shortlisted for the 2010 Stirling Prize.

Philip was architect for the Elephant & Castle Regeneration pilot, Wansey St, for which dRMM were awarded BD Public Housing Architect of the Year 2006. He is now designing residential units at Harper Square and Kings Cross.

Adam Cossey

Before completing the course at the Architectural Association and the Bartlett, Adam studied Human and Urban Geography at Reading University.

Adam has experience in working at a number of scales, from urban masterplanning to working closely with communities. He has specialised on education-related projects; as part of his studies, he set up children design workshops for the ‘joined-up design for schools programme’ with The Sorrell Foundation. Adam worked with Richard Rogers Partnership before joining our team. He drives a very old and elegant Porsche 911, a minimal one without any unnecessary accessories or ‘safety’ features.

Adeline Wee

Bio

Adeline completed her undergraduate and diploma at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Prior to joining dRMM she worked with Haworth Tompkins on cultural projects, including the award-winning North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford.

Specification of materials and careful attention to detailing are strengths that Adeline brings to dRMM’s projects. She was a key team member responsible for Blackpool Festival Headland, a unique cross-laminated timber tower that includes wedding venue. She is currently working on St Albans, an ARK Academy in central Birmingham.
When not peddling about on her folding bicycle Adeline may be seen whizzing around town in her vintage Mini Cooper.

Aelene Thorne

Aelene studied Architecture at Edinburgh University, completing her Part 2 at the AA. She has broad interests across the field of Architecture, including urban regeneration and sustainable design. Post Part 1, she worked at Feilden Clegg Bradley, on the St Mary Magdalene Academy in Islington.

At dRMM, Aelene has worked on Exeter Deaf Academy designing a timber gridshell roof with double curvature; St Alban’s Academy Birmingham completing and submitting the planning application; and Kings Cross elevation studies. Currently she works alongside Sadie co-ordinating a wide range of financial, admin, new work, ICT and marketing related issues, to develop her skills in architectural business management.

Daniel Wiltshire

After the University of Bath Daniel spent a year spent studying at the Royal Technical School (KTH) in Stockholm. He went on to work on housing schemes of varying scales at Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects. Whilst completing his MA at Sheffield Iniversity, Daniel helped to illustrate the book Flexible Housing; the themes of soft and hard design tactics continue to interest him.

Prior to joining dRMM in 2010, Daniel worked in Liverpool on a large secondary SEN school. Since joining us, he has worked intensively on new all-timber future school designs, forming a core team member of dRMM’s educational team. He’s a great worker and top runner but never seems to make coffee.

Diane Karner

Diane studied architecture in Graz and Lille, with a focus on building design and urban development. After her diploma, she worked for several years in Graz on large-scale high profile commercial and residential projects. Her main talents are within the beginning phase of projects. She’s interested in solving conceptual problems and developing cutting edge design solutions that make projects stand out.

Following a move to London in 2008, Diane focused on interior design projects before joining dRMM in 2009. She is now a permanent member of the Harper Road housing team, contributing her knowledge and experience to deliver complex design packages.

Elly Ward

As a mature recent graduate, Elly brings extensive experience from both architectural and non-architectural backgrounds. Most recently she has been employed at FAT and previously worked in PR, graphic design, project administration and even bar management. Currently she is working on the practice’s ‘de Ark’ project.

Elly’s strong graphic style and unique combination of pragmatism and play won her the Best Portfolio Prize at London Metropolitan University along with a nomination for the RIBA President’s Medals with coverage in several architectural publications. Blueprint cited Elly’s work as some of the ‘best and most innovative’ of 2010.

Isabel Pietri

Isabel graduated from the Architectural Association with her award-winning project ‘Mies Immersion’, a speculation on the legacy of Mies and the potentials of cross-laminated timber at a large scale. She has previously worked at Barkow Leibinger Architects and Foster + Partners and has taken part in building workshops in Portugal, London and Japan, involving hands-on construction using Japanese joinery and experimental concrete casting techniques.

Since joining dRMM Isabel has overseen the development of the façades throughout the design and construction phases of dRMM’s Stratford City North project for the 2012 London Olympics Athletes’ Village.

James Crawford

Bio

James completed his degree at Liverpool School of Architecture, where his final project entitled ‘A New Backdrop’ explored programmatic indeterminacy and the re-densification of Liverpool City centre to its industrial peak. In other words a large high rise apartment building…

Since joining dRMM, James has assisted with the construction design drawings for the Athletes’ Village for the London 2012 Olympics. He has also contributed to concept and exploratory models for the studio’s successful Battersea Power Station competition, and Southwark housing projects.
He is now set to complete his studies at the Royal College of Art.

Jasmin Sohi

A Bartlett School of Architecture graduate, Jasmin joined dRMM in 2004, returning in 2008 as postgraduate. Jasmin has worked on variety of our projects, eg the Stirling Prize shortlisted Clapham Manor School, .

Jasmin is on the design team for dRMM’s part of the Athletes’ Village for the London 2012 Olympics. Her expertise includes apartment and housing layouts, including compliance with the numerous residential standards.

Jasmin makes shoes and dresses and is interested in tailoring architecture from innovative fabric. We know this is also a flimsy excuse to visit sample sales.

Jonas Lencer

At dRMM, Jonas’ work has created new housing typologies. He was responsible for the design development and delivery of the Wansey Street project, a competition win which formed the ‘pilot’ for the ongoing redevelopment of Elephant and Castle, and for which dRMM were awarded BD Public Housing Architect of the Year in 2006.

Jonas has played key roles in dRMM’s London 2012 Athletes’ Village, Harper Square, and Battersea Power Station Regeneration. He also has responsibility for the practice internal production information review forum. Jonas specialises in combining conception with innovative structural and construction techniques.

Judith Stichtenoth

Bio

Prior to joining dRMM, Judith worked for LIN Architects on projects based in France and Germany. Notably, she was responsible for the design and detailed development of the external envelope of the Cite du Design in Saint-Etienne.

Judith is part of the design team working on dRMM’s housing and has contributed to the Stratford City North project. She is currently leading the Harper Road production team providing 72 apartments and townhouses, which forms part of the Elephant and Castle Regeneration in Southwark.

Judith has particular skills in organising and managing production activities, and solving technical and design issues in an innovative manner.

Junko Yanagisawa

A graduate of the Architectural Association in 2005, Junko was originally a student with dRMM in 2003 when she was involved in the construction stage of Kingsdale School’s auditorium and library. She provided specialised input on projects using cross-laminated timber, such as the Naked House for the INDUSTRY! exhibition in Oslo, Norway, Kingsdale School Music & Sports Buildings in London and Modern Art Oxford in Oxford.

Junko worked on key education projects including Clapham Manor School in London (shortlisted for the 2010 RIBA Stirling Prize) and the Four Dwellings Primary School project in Birmingham. Junko has also contributed to the design of the Rundeskogen tower scheme in Norway.

Michael Spooner

Bio

Michael has had a life-long curiosity for how people and cities work. He studied natural and medical sciences at the University of Calgary, and neurophysiology at Osaka University as a Monbusho scholar.

Not satisfied with vicariously enjoying architecture, he left the laboratory and moved to London in 1996 to study at the AA, followed by the RIBA Office-Based Examination. Michael’s understanding of the relationship between science and architecture has been applied to dRMM’s educational projects, research into construction, and an informed commitment to sustainability. Michael co-manages the design team with the Directors. He still keeps a white lab coat at home.

Oli Cunningham

Combining practice and education for many years, Oli runs his own practice alongside teaching roles and work with dRMM. Previously an Associate with Design Engine, he led their London office delivering a range of innovative projects from products and interiors to urban masterplanning, including new build, existing and listed buildings.

As a Design and Technology senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, Oli leads a final year degree studio and co-leads a postgrad studio undertaking research in urbanism. Recently at dRMM, Oli has focused on the delivery of Plot N26 on the Athletes Village and also regularly contributes to pre-planning and design reviews for projects and competitions.

Riccardo Monte

Riccardo studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and gained practical experience building timber roof structures at his uncle’s workshop. On the advice of his grandfather’s friend architect Vittorio Gregotti, he has broadened his experience working in London on several high profile projects for AModels, including a large model for Alison Brooks for the 2010 Venice Biennale. Riccardo’s design skills were also used on the Museum of Copenhagen for Brisac Gonzalez.

Since joining us in 2011 Riccardo has worked on dRMM’s Harper Road project, part of the Elephant & Castle regeneration. He is already a valuable member of our residential design team.

Russ Edwards

Bio

Russ has been responsible for the delivery of several dRMM key projects, including the Music & Sports buildings at Kingsdale School, and two buildings at the Athletes’ Village for the 2012 London Olympics. He is contributing to Battersea Power Station Regeneration. Russ’ expertise includes design team management; project administration and production information. He applies this and his design skills to projects of varying size and complexity.

In addition to project work; Russ manages dRMM’s internal knowledge transfer and best practice forums.
He has also been a visiting tutor at the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture.

Ryoko Kawaguchi

Prior to joining dRMM in October 2004, Ryoko studied at Cambridge and then worked at Toyo Ito’s Tokyo office. At dRMM shas gained hands-on experience and understanding of the european construction industry. She has been extensively involved in our education projects, ranging from refurbishment works at Kingsdale School to new timber school designs.

Ryoko has been key to defining the redevelopment plans for the Exeter Deaf Academy. She was responsible for the design and delivery of a new sensory pod in the old building, to provide a working prototype of the transformational spaces that will come to define the new Academy.

Sabine Rosenkranz

Sabine started her career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. In 2003, she moved to London to complete her studies at London Metropolitan University. Since joining dRMM, Sabine has been a member of the teams for the Atheletes’ Village and also the Harper Square housing, part of the broader Elephant & Castle Regeneration. Sabine is currently a key member of the team delivering dRMM’s competition winning proposals for the Battersea Power Station Regeneration.

Sabine has always been a keen model maker and combines this with a love for drawing. She believes that good design can be ecologically as well as socially sustainable.

Saskia Koopmann

Bio

Saskia studied architecture in Cologne, and at the TU-Berlin. Prior to joining dRMM Saskia worked on projects in the UK and Germany, including the masterplanning of historical ‘bastionnes’ in Cologne. She has expertise in design and construction at all scales, and within listed building contexts.

Saskia has worked on distinctive dRMM projects. She was project architect for a new Royal British Legion Club as part of Bracknell Regeneration masterplan, and on the forthcoming Hastings Pier redevelopment. She is completing the Tower Festival Headland which provides a wedding venue on the ’People’s Playground’ seafront of Blackpool.

Satoshi Isono

Before graduating from the Architectural Association, Satoshi studied Furniture and Interior Design at the ICS College of Arts in Tokyo. He was responsible for design and production information for the Music & Sports Buildings at Kingsdale School. Satoshi was project architect for the award-winning MK40 Tower for Milton Keynes Gallery, and Yard gallery at Modern Art Oxford. Other arts projects include studies for a ‘Mobile Tate’, and he is now working on Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales.

Satoshi oversees dRMM’s ongoing research, he also manages dRMM’s digital representation in a number of media, including website, montage, and film.

Steven Wallis

Steven studied architecture at RMIT University Melbourne under Prof Peter Corrigan, conducting research into generative design processes. He then worked with several prominent Melbourne practices, contributing to a range of residential, commercial and light industrial projects.

Emigrating to the UK in 2008, Steven first worked on dRMM’s Kings Cross designs. He then supported and now leads the everyday activities of our Stratford City North Atheletes’ Village project, now under construction. He oversees the completion of the design and ongoing co-ordination of sub-contractor packages. If it’s well built thank Steve.

Tamsin Pearce

Tamsin spent her early work years in various major record companies, primarily as an A&R co-ordinator. She then moved into media as a Production Manager at Granada TV Interactive. This led to five years at the BBC working with numerous TV websites and more recently in Audio & Music, on most of Radio 4’s flagship programmes. She returned to the music industry as Office Manager for a music advertising production company.

Tamsin joined dRMM in 2011 as Studio Manager. She works across all areas of administration offering structural support to a very busy office. She loves exciting architecture but is also quite partial to a good spreadsheet.

Tom Etchells

Whilst studying at the Glasgow School of Art, Tom explored a range of projects from office to installation design, developing a keen interest in the reuse and reinterpretation of existing interior spaces.

At dRMM Tom has worked on a number of projects at varying scales, including competitions. He has worked on primary and secondary school projects with visualisation and assisting on design development. Most recently he has contributed to the initial stages and remodelling of Hastings pier, where Tom has gained invaluable experience in public consultation and working with local education.

Victoria Marsh

Victoria has worked for the British Tourist Authority, and in the office of Prue Leith, renowned chef and restaurateur. She joined Jane Atkinson, media advisor to HRH The Princess of Wales, as her PA. She has also worked for Sports Marketing company Atkinson Courage, helping organising sports events and as a PA.
