dRMM's upcoming contributions to the London Festival of Architecture 2010 include:
* All aboard 'de Ark'!
When is a building not a building? When it is a ship. Everybody knows about a wooden ship in a glass bottle; during LFA2010, dRMM presents de Ark, a wooden building in a steel ship.
What is it? An exquisite 30m wooden cigar box on board a 60m Dutch cargo ship of steel. Why have a building in a ship? Economy, mobility and autonomy. The maverick pleasure of total independence. With this project and exhibition, dRMM demonstrate themselves as timber construction pioneers, design captains and Thames pirates!
dRMM and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands invite you to an exhibition that focuses on de Ark's design, accompanied by a series of events, presentations and discussions that locate the project within the broader context of contemporary architecture and the relationships between architecture and water.
Details: NL, The Dutch Cultural Pop-Up Space, 40-42 Riding House Street, London W1W 7ET from 24 June to 10 July, Thursday to Sunday 12pm to 6pm. See also www.nlpopup.co.uk.
One ancillary event for your diary: Alex de Rijke will give a talk at the National Gallery on 25 June at 6:30pm on designing de Ark and using waterways, connecting all this to works in the National Gallery collections.
* Sadie Morgan is a panel member for the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) sponsored debate Designs on London: Who's driving what gets built and how can we do it better?. This free, publicly accessible event (subject to ticket availability) takes place on 29 June at 5:30pm at Alan Baxter & Associates, The Gallery, 77 Cowcross Street London EC1M 6EL. Tickets can be booked via the festival website.
* If, like most of us at dRMM, you're into cycling, you might like to drop into Fourth Door Research's exhibition Riding On Empty: Designing our travel infrastructure for the end of oil, which includes dRMM's concept design and model for a 'cycle station'. This exhibition, running between 19 June and 4 July, will be held at Bermondsey Square and also at various extra exhibtion sites across London. Alex de Rijke will join other panel members in a discussion on 22 June from 6pm. Further details can be found on www.cyclestations.co.uk.
* dRMM's No. one Centaur Street project has been selected as one of the buildings to represent 50 Years of London Architecture 1960-2010, an exhibition opening on 19 June for two weeks in the Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1Y 5BD.
We hope you can join us for some of these LFA2010 events. Keep up-to-date via www.lfa2010.org.
